During the Asia morning session, Bank of Japan had intervene the forex market by buying USDJPY. USDJPY spikes up from 75.6o to 79.50.

Knowingly that Bank of Japan will not succeed in this intervention, I had shorted USDJPY and buy back USDJPY 1 hour later. Profit for this trade is USD1050.04. Not bad for 1 hour’s effort.

Stock with Strong Buybacks (Part 2)

On 2 May 2011, which is 2 months ago, I had sent out this article entitled "Stock with strong buybacks", click here to read. This stock has since gone up 13%. We believe it has more upside potential.

Name of this stock is call Strayer Education. This stock is listed in Nasdaq.

You can see from the chart below that the price on 2 May was $122.65. Price on today is $138.86. This means that stock price had appreciated 13%.

Well if you’ve been trading for 15 years, I would think you could find at least one or two statements which show a profitable month. One month out of twelve? Something. Anything to let your potential customers know that you actually walk the walk.

How to get a job as a hedge fund manager

Becoming a hedge fund manager certainly has its perks... if you are successful. The King of the Hedgies is currently John Paulson who raked in £1bn for a years work shorting the sub prime markets and others certainly are not poor.

Can you do it?

The answer to that question is a yes and no. Just like it is possible for everyone to be a sports star. If you have the right physical capacity, the mental toughness and the commitment you can get to the top of your game, and of course, there is an element of luck in everything.

The first thing to know about hedge funds is what they are. There are many resources on the web that will go into chapter and verse but the simple explanation is that, typically, a hedge fund is a set up as a company, lets call it ABC Ltd, which is set up in a tax efficient jurisdiction such as the Caymans or BVI, for example.

The company generally has two classes of shares (it can have more) one are management shares (so you own the company) and the other shares are investors shares (which carry no voting rights).

This company will have various service providers such as:

Prime brokerage: Prime brokers provide a range of customised services to hedge funds. Current services include handling trade execution, clearing and settlement, providing financing and technology services, risk management and operational support facilities, securities lending, and making introductions to sources of capital.

Fund Administration: Some hedge hedge funds conduct administration internally while others choose to outsource certain functions such as their accounting, investor services, risk analysis or performance measurement functions to third party administrators. Some outsourcers offer independent pricing of a fund's portfolio of securities.

Custody: Hedge fund assets are generally held with a custodian, including cash in the fund as well as the actual securities. Custodians may also control flow of capital to meet margin calls.

Of course there will also be a manager of the fund. Assuming you are the one looking to set the fund up, that would be you.

This all sounds a little complicated but there are plenty of administrative services that could put this set-up together for you for around $70,000.

The set up, however, is not the problem. Getting money into the fund is.

Lets say you have a fund set up, you have even managed to get yourself a fund management company properly licensed, you are ready to go as a newly fledged hedge fund manager. Problem now is that you have to get money into the fund and this is where your problems start.

The continuing fees from your administrators above are payable on an annual basis so your overhead is there. Covering these overheads will be the fees you get from your fund. Fees are the now notorious '2 & 20' meaning that there is a 2% annual fee and 20% of the profits.

Lets say your overheads are £100,000 per annum, you will need at least £5mn into your fund for the annual fee to cover your overhead. In anyone's language, that is a large chunk of change. To get this you will need to prove to potential investors that you know what you are doing.

Sarah Butcher, editor of eFinancialCareers.com agrees. "You can't just be someone off the street and set up a hedge fund," she says. "Investors want to put their money with someone who has a track record."

When speaking with investors you need to be able to show them your performance and the strategies you use. Gaining this experience is the key.

Going the traditional route you will either train with an investment bank or directly with a hedge fund company. Investment banks are looking for someone with a good degree, maybe in maths or physics, they want someone who is tough minded, a quick learner and someone who has the capacity to make trading decisions based around sometimes complex structures.

Finding your way directly into hedge funds can be hard, they are notoriously secretive. By far the more tradional route is through working as a trader with an investment bank.

So if you have missed the boat as far as becoming a new boy at an investment house are your dreams of becoming a hedge fund trader over?

Not quite. The thing about managing money is that people are looking for performance. If you can show a track record of performance then people will want to invest money with you. You clearly have to have the capacity for enjoying the stock market, so you probably have been buying and selling stocks but you will need to learn more about other market instrument such as futures etc.

You can do this by opening an account at a reputable trading house and downloading their trading system. They will provide you trade ideas and the explanations behind them and they will help you develop your portfolio operating on trades similar to what the hedge funds do. If you immerse yourself in this type of trading, making profits on your own portfolio, then you are creating a track record. If you are successful enough then you may get to the point where you believe you have the capacity to start a fund.

We are not saying it is easy, it most certainly is not, but not being a 20 year old with a first from Oxford does not necessarily limit your potential career as afund manager. It is a long hard slog to get anyone to believe that you are credible but the rewards are there if you get to that stage.

The billionaire boys have spent years perfecting their art in most cases and now have the ear of huge amounts of money, but don't give up because you can't work in an investment bank.. remember 'money follows performance'.

Stock with Strong Buybacks

When a company buys back its own stock, there are many advantages to the investor.

Advantages to the Investor

Buying back stock means that the company earnings are now split among fewer shares, meaning higher earnings per share (EPS). Theoretically, higher earnings per share should command a higher stock price which is great!

Buying back stock uses up excess cash. The returns on excess cash in money market accounts can drag down overall company performance. Cash rich companies are also very attractive takeover targets. Buying back stock allows the company to earn a better return on excess cash and keep itself from becoming a takeover target.

Buying back stock allows a company to pass on extra cash to shareholders without raising the dividend. If the cash is temporary in nature it may prove more beneficial to pass on value to shareholders through buybacks rather than raising the dividend.

Buying back stock can increase the return on equity (ROE). This effect is greater the more undervalued the shares are when they are repurchased. If shares are undervalued, this may be the most profitable course of action for the company.

When a company purchases its own stock it is essentially telling the market that they think that the company’s stock is undervalued. This can have a psychological effect on the market.

Stock buybacks also raise the demand for the stock on the open market. This point is rather self explanatory as the company is competing against other investors to purchase shares of its own stock.

Stock with strong Buybacks

Buy and Hold strategy no longer Effective:

As an investor, it is important to know when to invest aggressively and know when to hold cash. If you feel that stock market is at its peak, investors should hold near to 100% cash in his porfolio. Hedge fund managers turn bearish on US equities says new survey

Hedge fund managers have turned bearish on US equities, according to the TrimTabs/BarclayHedge Survey of Hedge Fund Managers for February. About 40% of the 89 hedge fund managers the firms surveyed in the past week are bearish on the S&P 500, up sharply from 26% in January, while only 26% are bullish, down from 37%.

“Bullish sentiment less bearish sentiment is negative for the first time since November,” says Sol Waksman, founder and President of BarclayHedge. Increased caution might owe in part to excellent recent performance. The Barclay Hedge Fund Index has posted a positive return for six straight months.”

About 37% of hedge fund managers are bearish on the 10-year Treasury note, while only 15% are bullish. Bullish and bearish sentiment on the U.S. dollar index are balanced at 31%. Meanwhile, 18% of managers aim to increase leverage in the near term, while only 15% plan to lever down.

“Managers aim to lever up even though they are bearish on both bonds and stocks,” notes Vincent Deluard, Executive Vice President at TrimTabs. “Why? They still have a large incentive to gamble with borrowed money because short rates round to nil. If one of the Fed’s goals was to ignite speculation and greed then it has succeeded famously.”

About 52% of hedge fund managers feel the rally owes primarily to QE2, while 35% cite the end of quantitative easing in June as the biggest threat to the rally. TrimTabs points out that the level of the S&P 500 and the size of the Fed’s balance sheet have exhibited a positive correlation of 88.4% since the start of QE1 in March 2009. Meanwhile, managers are concerned about oil prices. About 24% believe oil is more likely to hit $150 per barrel than the S&P 500 is likely to ascend to 1,600.

“We’ll take the other side of that action,” notes Deluard. “We did see a similar surge to $150 from $100 in 2008, and tension in the Middle East is obviously higher now. But oil spiking to $150 from here represents a move of nearly seven standard deviations, while the S&P 500 climbing to 1,600 represents a move of less than three standard deviations. The market participants who agree with us that concern about sharply higher oil prices is overdone might consider capitalising by selling long-dated out-of-the-money call options on oil futures.”

Investment Updates for Stock Investing

Dear friends,

Sharing a story:

At about September 2010 (6 months ago) one of my stock investing student asked me what stock should he invest. My answer to him was oil related stocks listed in US. I had chosen stocks listed in US because most of the 'hot money' was flowing into Asian stock markets, resulting in expensive valuation for most good Asian stocks. US stock market had been neglected and so they were pretty cheap at that time.

But the reply from my student was that oil price was low (oil price was at $70+ at that time), why should he be buying oil stock? I find that his question quite amusing but this is the thought of most investors. Most investors think that they should be buying oil stocks when oil price is high OR they should be buying commodity stocks when commodity prices are high.

But the matter of truth is that you should be buying oil stocks when oil price is low AND you should be buying commodity stocks when commodity prices are cheap. That's when you can make good profits out from your investments.

I had bought Transocean (listed in US) for myself at that time. Transocean is the world's biggest oil rig provider. It was only trading at $45.70 at that time. Thanks to middle east problem, this has pushed oil price above $100. And I was able to sell all my Transocean at $81.00 this week.

What happen to that student? At that time he said he was interested to buy Genting (listed in Singapore). Genting was trading near to all time high at that time and it had been falling since start of 2011. I hope he manage to get out in time.

The morale of the story is: Do not follow the crowd. If you follow the crowd, you are likely to perform like the crowd. Most people (the crowd) lose money in stock investments. Because they like to buy when stock market is hot, or when a particular stock is rising.

Our investment strategy is very different. We look for value in stock. If we think that a stock is worth $1, we are interested to buy it when it is trading at 50 cents or below. When a stock is rising, normally we do not find value in those stocks.

Market Outlook:

According to investment funds flow (from my email titled 'Where are the investment funds flowing into?'), the funds are flowing into US small cap stocks. This is a sign that most stock market are either overvalued or simply out of radar from investors.

This is a sign that we could be at a MAJOR PEAK of a global stock market. I had been using the recent rise in US stock market to sell my STRA this week.

Currently I still have Bank of America in my portfolio. I had bought Bank of America at $12.33 and it was trading at $14.22 last Friday.

Since I am expecting a stock market correction, my portfolio is sitting on 70% in cash now. When the buying season is back, we will inform our stock subscribers.

Potential 100% Gainer

Once a while we manage to find a stock that is worth two dollar but market is only pricing in one dollar. Hence there is potential 100% upside for this stock. Such opportunities exist because there are not much research coverage on the companies. Or they are not yet discovered by big investors or fund managers.

We manage to find one such stock lately:

1. This company is in diversified business (energy, water treatment and property) hence it does not need to rely on one individual industry to grow its revenue.

Why FX trading is a must for today`s investors.

Forex trading, also known as FX, is a market not as well known as stocks and shares and many inexperienced investors break out in a cold sweat at the thought of trading in currencies. FX carries a public perception that any dealer must have swathes of knowledge of global affairs but in reality, currency trading is much more accessible that the stock market. Sceptical? Read on and discover why...

First and foremost, FX welcomes novices and there is a huge range of tools and aids which can ease a beginner into the market. And what`s more, many of these are free! Most online brokers offer a simulation platform where dummy accounts can be opened on which investors can practice their skills and develop an effective trading strategy. These demo accounts offer full functionality and accurately mimic a live account, making it an absolute essential before launching into live trading. Even experienced traders utilise this facility with many opting to try out new strategies on a demo platform rather than risk losing cash on an unknown trading practice.

Many FX traders start off with limited funds; this is not an arena where you need to be practically a millionaire to start out. Some brokers offer mini accounts with starting balances from around Ł20. 8 years ago I told my friends (ex-bank traders who are in their 40s and 50s) that I want to trade forex successfully. They told me that it is impossible to make money consistently from forex. They told me that they can do it because they have order flow information in the bank. They know where are the big buy orders, big sell orders and big stop loss orders. 1. Bank of America used to be trading at $54. Now it is only trading at $12 to $14. This stock has a lot of room to grow.

2. It's gained market share in mortgages. With Bank of America's Countrywide acquisition, it now controls 20% of the U.S. mortgage market.

3. A housing recovery opens doors for profits. Bank of America owns more homes than anyone, so an uptick in home buying and home prices will be huge for the company, especially as a housing shortage is likely in 2012.

4. Individual investors are buying stocks. As more and move investors return to the markets, Bank of America's Merrill Lynch arm will continue to grow.

5. Job creation is key for better credit. As unemployment improves, so will consumer credit and the ability to buy homes.
